Costa Rica Bird Photography Tour

On this bird photography tour to Costa Rica, travel across the country.

Itinerary

Arrive at the Juan Santa Maria International Airport in San Jose. Clear immigration and customs formalities and transfer to the hotel and overnight in San Jose.

Depart from San Jose after breakfast for the rainforest Lodge of the tour. Enroute stop at one of the spots to photograph hummingbirds and continue to our lodge. Arrive in the evening and check-in. You will spend 3 nights here.

 

 

Early in the morning, setup at the Lodge’s deck for Toucans, oropendolas, aracaris, etc. After breakfast, our focus would shift to the hide which is frequented by King Vultures. In afternoon back to Toucans and other birds at the deck.

Early in the morning, setup at the Lodge’s deck for Toucans, oropendolas, aracaris, etc. Following breakfast, the guide would setup the multi flashes for Hummingbird Photography. After lunch, in afternoon back to Toucans and other birds at the deck. In the evening, photograph bats in flight. Have dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Depart right after breakfast to Sarapiqui for a full day of frogs and snakes. Guests can expect to see and photograph as many as 8 species of snakes and 6-8 species of Frogs. You will be able to use different kinds of lights and settings for macro photography.

Today is spent with a local naturalist. Before breakfast we will look for the Tapirs that comes around the garden of our lodge. Then we head out into the field where you will be looking for Owls, White Bats, new species of Hummingbirds and many other birds.

Overnight in Sarapiqui

Once again we will look for the Tapirs around the lodge before breakfast. We will then depart for the highlands, on our arrival we will have lunch and spend the afternoon photographing hummingbirds in flight. Our target species will be the many highland species.

Overnight in Talamanca Cloud Forest

In the morning, we dedicate our time to photographing the Resplendent Quetzal and in the evening the guide would setup the multi flash for capturing some of the hummingbirds that are endemic to the Highlands.

In the morning, we dedicate our time to photographing the Resplendent Quetzal and after breakfast transfer to the Pacific Side.

Overnight in the Mid Pacific Side

On day 10, we will be out with a local naturalist. The target species for the day will be scarlet Macaws, motmots, owls, cuckoos, manakins, trogons, etc.

On day 11 we will have 2 safari boat outings, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This gives us advantage of different light from different areas of the river with different targets – Caracaras, Tiger Herons, Boat-billed Herons, Hawks, Roseate Spoonbills and more.

Overnight in the Mid Pacific Side

A short drive (45 minutes) from our lodge will take us to the San Jose Airport so that you can take you flight back home. Breakfast included depending on departure time.
