Hi, I am Gaurav Ramnarayanan, a wildlife photographer based in Coimbatore, India. I did my schooling in Coimbatore and currently pursuing my Bachelors Degree. Welcome to my website, hope you enjoy viewing my work.
From when I was toddler I spent a lot of time outdoors and don’t remember too many holidays to the cities. When I was about 3, I took my first photo with a Kodak camera which my dad gifted to me in 2001. I began clicking pictures of family members and pets. We owned and still do own a house in Masinagudi, the backyard where I learnt most of my antics with the camera. It was there that on a holiday when I forgot batteries for my Kodak camera, my dad gave his Nikon F6o1 to use. I was probably 6 years old then. Being able to use such equipment and also visiting various places provided the opportunity to hone my skills in the art. Beyond that my love for nature grew leaps and bounds.
In 2004, the digital age was in full swing but I still continued shooting with film. It was in that year the dad bought his first Digital camera and we both together saw our first wild tigers. I continued using film cameras until 2007 and then gradually took fascination to video. But this didn’t last long and eventually moved back to still photography with a digital camera.
Until 2009, I travelled quite extensively across the south of India but never up north. In 2010, the opportunity to travel to North India knocked at the door when a group of friends planned a road trip from Coimbatore to Central India’s tiger parks in summer that year, a trip that would cover 4,500 km over 15 days. From then on, I travelled at least twice a year to the north – once in summer and once in winter. Until date, Ranthambhore remains the most visited park and my personal favourite too. Besides travel in India, I’ve also ventured out photographing wildlife in Sri Lanka, Africa, Europe and New Zealand.
My work has been published in an array of magazines both Indian and International, calendars, coffee table books and also bagged a couple of Awards of International acclaim.
